Do You Need a Visa to Transit Through Vietnam?

A connection through Vietnam does not have one answer for every passenger. Before deciding whether you need a visa, establish whether the journey requires you to pass through immigration and enter the country.

Your nationality, travel documents and complete route matter. The length of the connection alone is not enough to determine the answer.

Check whether you can remain airside

Ask your operating airline whether your connection can be completed within the international transit area.

Confirm that the arrangement works for your actual flights and tickets. Do not rely only on the words “connecting flight” in a booking summary.

Prepare the flight numbers, connection airport and ticket details when asking the airline.

Look for a domestic flight in Vietnam

A journey containing a domestic flight needs particular attention.

For example, an international arrival in Hanoi followed by a flight to Ho Chi Minh City involves travel between two Vietnamese cities.

Vietnam Airlines’ connection guidance describes immigration procedures at the first domestic airport for relevant itineraries and advises passengers to prepare the required entry documents. Vietnam Airlines connecting-flight guidance

Do not treat this route as equivalent to remaining in an international transit area.

Confirm baggage and check-in arrangements

Ask the airline:

  • Is checked baggage tagged to the final destination?
  • Must I collect it during the connection?
  • Will I receive the onward boarding pass in advance?
  • Does the transfer require immigration or movement outside the transit area?

These questions are especially useful when separate tickets or different airlines are involved. They help identify the procedure without assuming that every separate-ticket connection works the same way.

Planning to leave the airport?

A city visit or a hotel outside the transit area introduces a different question: whether you are permitted to enter Vietnam.

Check the appropriate visa or exemption arrangements before planning the outing. A long layover by itself is not confirmation that entry is permitted.

Prepare your complete route

Write the journey in order, including every airport and country. Add your nationality, passport type, connection duration and whether the tickets are separate.

This gives the airline or adviser enough context to assess the question meaningfully.

Ask about your next step

Share your nationality, purpose of travel and intended arrival date with the chatbot at WOW VN Visa. Include the full connecting route and confirm transfer procedures with your airline before departure.
