Vietnam E-Visa Photo Requirements: A Practical Guide
Preparing the right images is an important part of a Vietnam e-visa application. You will need to distinguish between your portrait photograph and the image of your passport’s personal information page. They serve different purposes and should be prepared separately.
Before uploading, check the instructions displayed on the official application portal. Use the guidance below to organise your files and identify problems early.
Prepare your portrait photograph
Vietnam’s published application guidance specifies a recent, front-facing portrait with a white background, no hat and no glasses. It describes a 4 × 6 cm photograph in JPG or JPEG format, with a file size below 2 MB. Check the live portal for any updated upload specifications. Official application guidance
As a practical preparation step, use even lighting and make sure your face is clearly visible. Avoid beauty filters or editing tools that change your facial features.
A passport-style photograph is more suitable than a cropped holiday photograph containing other people or a busy background.
Prepare the passport information page
Use a clear image of the passport page containing your photograph and personal details.
Before uploading it:
- Check that the page is fully visible.
- Remove glare or shadows that obscure information.
- Make sure the image is correctly oriented.
- Confirm that names, dates and document numbers are readable.
Do not cover a section of the page with your fingers. If the image is difficult to read, take another photograph rather than trying to reconstruct the text.
Check the actual files
Open each file before submitting it. Make sure the portrait and passport images have not been mixed up.
If you compress an image to reduce its size, inspect the result afterwards. A smaller file is useful only if the information remains clear.
Follow any additional dimensions or file instructions shown in the current upload fields.
Review information extracted from the image
Where the application automatically extracts passport information, compare the completed fields with the original document. Uploading a readable image does not remove the need for a final review.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reuse an existing photograph?
Only if it meets the current requirements and accurately represents your appearance.
Does a successful upload confirm that the image is acceptable?
No. Uploading a file and having the application assessed are separate steps.
